How to stop makeup from cracking on your chin: A pro's prep routine

Makeup artist Saj Mack pressing moisturiser into the chin to prep skin so makeup doesn't crack

You look in the mirror at 2pm and your chin looks like a dry riverbed. Little cracks, a few flakes, foundation sitting in every line. Lovely.

If your makeup keeps cracking on your chin, you're not alone. The chin is one of the first places foundation gives up, and it's rarely because you did something wrong. It's usually a mix of dry skin, product and movement. Here's why it happens, and the exact routine I use to stop makeup from cracking.

Why does foundation crack on the chin?

Your chin moves all day. Talking, smiling, eating, resting your face in your hand during that one meeting. Every movement bends whatever is sitting on top of the skin. If that layer is dry and stiff, it cracks. Think of paint on a door hinge.

The skin there also tends to get dry or flaky on its own, especially in colder months or if you've been heavy-handed with exfoliating or acne products.

What causes makeup to crack on dry skin

Skin that's thirsty underneath. Makeup can't fix dryness. It just sits on top of it and shows it off.

Makeup going on too soon. If your moisturiser is still wet on the surface, foundation slides around, pills, and cracks later.

Primer. I know. But primers often cause more separation than they fix.

Setting spray on wet foundation. Wet on wet makes an unstable texture that breaks up as the day goes on.

Too much product. A thick layer has more to crack.

How to stop makeup from cracking: my 6-step routine

This is exactly what I do, in this order.

The washcloth wipe. Cleanse with your favourite daily cleanser, then take it off with a clean, damp, warm washcloth. It's a gentle physical exfoliation that lifts dry flakes and buildup without irritating your skin barrier right before makeup.

Layer hydration. While your skin is still damp, apply a lightweight hydrating toner or essence, then a hyaluronic acid serum. Press them in. Don't rub.

Lock it in. Follow with a rich, emollient moisturiser. For dry skin I often reach for Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentré or Weleda Skin Food. Be generous on dry spots like your chin. You're building a soft, supple layer for makeup to sit on.

The 10-minute cool down. Wait a full 10 minutes before you touch your makeup. Make the coffee. Find the other shoe. Your skin needs that time to absorb everything, and this is the step most people skip.

Skip the primer. Go straight into your base. When your skin is prepped properly, you don't need it.

Blend first, spray last. Apply and blend your foundation and concealer. Then set high-movement areas like your chin with a tiny amount of translucent powder. Setting spray goes on at the very end, over the finished look, never into wet foundation.

How to fix cracked makeup during the day

Already cracked? Don't add more foundation. Keep a travel-size hydrating mist in your bag. Hold it at arm's length, mist over your face, let it settle for a moment, then gently press the chin with your ring finger. The makeup softens back into your skin and the cracks smooth out.

The skin side

If your chin is constantly flaky, red or irritated no matter what you put on it, that's worth a closer look. Sometimes it's a skincare product doing too much. Persistent patches deserve a visit to a dermatologist. (General information, not medical advice.)

Makeup cracking FAQ

Why does my foundation crack even when I moisturise? Usually because the makeup went on too soon. If moisturiser is still wet on the surface, foundation can't grip, so it slides and cracks later. Wait a full 10 minutes.

Should I use primer if my makeup cracks? I skip it. Primer adds another layer that can separate. Good skin prep does the job instead.

Does setting spray stop makeup from cracking? It helps, but only at the very end. Spraying into wet foundation makes the texture unstable and more likely to break up.

What kind of foundation is best for dry skin that cracks? Flexible textures like balm, cream and skin tints move with your face. Very matte, long-wear formulas set firmly and crack more easily on dry skin.

When it's the products, not you

If you've tried everything and your chin still cracks by lunch, it's probably the formula. That's something I can see in a consultation: your skin type, how it behaves through the day, and which textures will actually hold up.
